The navigation through the Suez Canal is going as normal, and the suspension of transit by some companies through the canal is a "temporary matter," Adm. Ossama Rabiee, the chairman and managing director of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), said Tuesday.
"Navigation through the Suez Canal is going as per normal... Some companies' suspension of their transit through the Canal is a temporary matter, and we continue our efforts in communicating with all the clients and shipping lines to best serve global trade," the SCA quoted Rabiee as saying.
Rabiee said last week that the navigation through the canal from January 1-11 decreased by 30% year-on-year, adding that the canal's revenues were down 40%.
In November 2023, Yemen's rebel Ansar Allah movement, also known as the Houthis, pledged to attack any ships associated with Israel until it stops its military actions in the Gaza Strip. Several shipping companies have since announced the suspension of their transit through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
In December, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced the establishment of a multinational operation to secure navigation in the Red Sea. Last week, the US and UK military carried out airstrikes on Houthi targets in the movement's controlled parts of Yemen, including the capital of Sanaa.
