MOSCOW (Sputnik) - UK broadcaster Sky News has earlier reported that the cost of maritime shipping through the Suez Canal has risen by 310% since November 2023 against the background of the Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea.
The navigation through the Suez Canal is going as normal, and the suspension of transit by some companies through the canal is a "temporary matter," Adm. Ossama Rabiee, the chairman and managing director of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), said Tuesday.
"Navigation through the Suez Canal is going as per normal... Some companies' suspension of their transit through the Canal is a temporary matter, and we continue our efforts in communicating with all the clients and shipping lines to best serve global trade," the SCA quoted Rabiee as saying.
Rabiee said last week that the navigation through the canal from January 1-11 decreased by 30% year-on-year, adding that the canal's revenues were down 40%.
In November 2023, Yemen's rebel Ansar Allah movement, also known as the Houthis, pledged to attack any ships associated with Israel until it stops its military actions in the Gaza Strip. Several shipping companies have since announced the suspension of their transit through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
In December, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced the establishment of a multinational operation to secure navigation in the Red Sea. Last week, the US and UK military carried out airstrikes on Houthi targets in the movement's controlled parts of Yemen, including the capital of Sanaa.

Mass Displacement of Palestinians May Pose Existential Threat to Jordan, Prime Minister States
A potential mass displacement of Palestinians could pose an existential threat to Jordan and would be a violation of the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel, Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh said on Tuesday.
"There are actions and conditions that are aimed at generating and creating a mass displacement of [the Palestinian] population... It is a clear violation of the Article 2 of the Jordan-Israeli peace treaty. The Jordanian prime minister expressed his hope that the two countries would never arrive at that point, adding that Jordan was "firmly committed to comprehensive peace" and the two-state solution.

US 'Fully Anticipated' Retaliatory Strikes by Houthis, White House's Kirby Says
The United States expected retaliatory strikes by the Houthis after last week's military action in Yemen, White House Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said on Tuesday.
"We fully anticipated when we launched the salvo on Friday night that the Houthis would probably conduct some retaliatory strikes," Kirby said during a press briefing.
On Tuesday, US forces destroyed four Houthi anti-ship ballistic missiles in response to the January 15 attack. According to US officials, these Houthi missiles were prepared to launch from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and presented an imminent threat to both merchant and US Navy ships in the region.
"As you saw today, we took additional strikes knocking out four ballistic missiles that we believe were prepped and ready to be launched from Yemen, took them out before they could do that. So we have said before, we'll say it again: we stand ready to defend our interests, our sailors, our ships and that of merchant shipping, as required. We're not looking for a war. We're not looking to expand this," Kirby added.

Israel's Army Strikes Building Near Group of Journalists in Southern Gaza
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has hit a building in the vicinity of a group of journalists as they were trying to send information on the wounded after another Israeli strike, a Sputnik correspondent reported on Tuesday.
An Israeli warplane has bombed a house in the west of the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip as several journalists were nearby to make their reports. The journalists were standing next to ambulances that had arrived to evacuate those wounded by the ongoing Israeli bombing, the correspondent reported.
The correspondent reported that the bombing of Khan Yunis is still underway despite the IDF order to the residents of the enclave to evacuate from the north to the supposedly safer south. The continuous bombardment makes the city look like a war zone.
Medical sources told Sputnik that seven Palestinians have been killed, and several others have been wounded in the past few hours as a result of the continuous bombing of the city, adding that the wounded have been taken to the Nasser Hospital.
