TEHRAN (Sputnik) - The United States is evacuating its Hemo military base located near the airport of the city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria after repeated attacks by "Iraqi resistance" forces, Iranian news agency Tasnim reported on Tuesday, citing sources.
The agency cited Syrian sources as saying that the Hemo base is being evacuated due to repeated attacks by "Iraqi Islamic resistance groups."
The report said the Hemo base, located 4 kilometers west of Qamishli Airport, is one of the most important US bases in Syria, staffed by at least 350 US military personnel. The base serves as a US training center for training the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, the report said.
Last week, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called on the Shiite "resistance front" in various Arab countries to "strike the enemy" wherever it may be. Shiite groups within the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" have announced the first strikes on the Hemo military base near Qamishli Airport.
Iraqi armed groups have earlier announced strikes against another US military base at the Koniko field in the province of Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria. Moreover, several drones have been shot down in the vicinity of Erbil International Airport in northern Iraq, where the base of the international counterterrorism force is located.
