Burkina Faso Acquires More Powerful Missiles, Other Military Equipment, Transition President Says
Burkina Faso is intensifying its fight against a jihadist insurgency that has spread from neighboring Mali. On January 8, the country's interim leader, Ibrahim Traore, reportedly issued a decree creating the Special rapid intervention brigade, a large inter-army operational unit to combat terrorism.
Burkina Faso acquired more powerful missiles and other military equipment, according to the country's Transition President, Ibrahim Traore.
Ibrahim Traore says the initiative is aimed at stepping up the
fight against terrorism. It is expected to be deployed in 2024.
"We have acquired much more powerful missiles. This is what has been experienced in [the Burkinabe city of] Djibo. Some are 2, 3, 5, 10 times more powerful, and others keep coming. During the year, a lot of equipment will arrive. The firepower will increase considerably," he said.
The leader added that these acquisitions are the result of a strict management of resources and prove that the country is "capable of waging war."
