BEIJING (Sputnik) - On Saturday, Taiwan held elections of the island's head of administration. Pro-independence candidate, Lai Ching-te won the elections with 40.05% of the votes. Commenting on the results, Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman noted that Russia considers the island an integral part of China.
Beijing appreciates Russia's position on the recent elections in Taiwan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Monday.
In light of the elections that took place in Taiwan last week, Moscow urged "external forces" to refrain from any provocations that could undermine stability and international security in the Taiwan Strait, adding that Russia continues to consider the island a part of China and opposes its independence in any form.
"We highly appreciate the position of Russia," Mao told reporters, commenting on Moscow's statement.
