ANKARA (Sputnik) - Turkey has provided documents to The Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) within the genocide suit filed by South Africa against Israel, and believes in a fair trial, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday.
The ICJ is hearing the case on Thursday and Friday. It is expected to issue a provisional ruling to protect Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and ensure Israel's compliance with the 1948 Genocide Convention. Israel is participating in the proceedings, despite not recognizing the jurisdiction of the top UN court. The Israeli delegation is headed by UK lawyer Malcolm Shaw.

"All the documents we provide are being processed at The Hague. We will continue to provide more and more assistance to the regions. The documents and images we provide will condemn Israel there. We expect this. We believe in justice at The Hague," Erdogan told reporters.

South Africa filed a lawsuit accusing Israel of genocidal intent in Gaza at the ICJ on December 29 in response to a rising civilian death toll in the besieged Palestinian enclave. It seeks to prove that Israel's military campaign is genocidal in nature and targets Gazans as a part of the broader Palestinian people.

Israel-Palestine Escalation
What is South Africa Accusing Israel of in Genocide Case Heard in ICJ?
On October 7, Palestinian movement Hamas launched a large-scale rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip while its fighters breached the border, opening fire on the military and civilians. As a result, over 1,200 people in Israel were killed and some 240 others abducted. Israel launched retaliatory strikes, ordered a complete blockade of Gaza, and launched a ground incursion into the Palestinian enclave with the declared goal of eliminating Hamas fighters and rescuing the hostages. Over 23,000 people have been killed so far in Gaza.
On November 24, Qatar mediated a deal between Israel and Hamas on a temporary truce and the exchange of some of the prisoners and hostages, as well as the delivery of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. The ceasefire was extended several times and expired on December 1.
