Sweden to Stop Development Aid to Mali Over Country's Support for Russia at UN, Reports Say

In February 2023, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, prepared by Western countries. The document, which is not binding, calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, but does not mention the need to stop the shelling of Donbass by Ukrainian troops.
Sweden plans to stop development aid to Mali after the country voted against the United Nations General Assembly resolution demanding withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, media reported.

"When we cooperate with other countries, we want those countries to want to cooperate with Sweden too, but Mali's military leadership turns to Russia instead [...] Our humanitarian aid, that is, assistance to those in need in the form of food, water and medicine, will remain in Mali, while development aid will cease," Swedish Minister for Foreign Trade, Johan Forssell was quoted by the outlet.

Over the past ten years, Sweden has reportedly allocated more than $352 million (3.5 billion Swedish kronor) for Mali's development. The decision to abolish development aid is part of the government's work to reform bilateral aid to African countries, the media said.
Lately, Russia has intensified cooperation with countries in the Sahel region. In late August, leaders of Mali and Burkina Faso met with Russia's defense ministry official to discuss strengthening the defense and military cooperation. In December, Russia and Niger signed an agreement on reinforcing military partnership.
