Mali and its neighbors in the Sahel, Niger and Burkina Faso, have been plagued by a jihadist insurgency since 2011.
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) repelled terrorist attacks in four locations in the north of the West African country, including one in the town of Menaka, which is surrounded by Daesh* jihadists, the military announced late Sunday.

"The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have successively repelled terrorist attacks against four (military) posts in the localities of Labbezagan, Gossi, Tessalit and Menaka," reported a statement issued on Sunday night.

The Malian armed forces said the terrorists fired "harassing and indirect fire" at their posts in Gossi and Tessalit.
In Menaka, a major town in northeastern Mali near the border with Niger, "despite a large concentration of terrorist fighters determined to do battle with our forces, the FAMa inflicted a bloody defeat on them, neutralizing several dozen terrorists and arresting about twenty," the Malian army said.
