On December 25, China gave zero tariff treatment on imports of another six African countries, thus boosting trade cooperation. AfroVerdict host sits down with an economist to discuss how China's activity and Global South cooperation boost development across the African continent.
This isn't the first time China has given "preferential treatment" to African countries. By "expanding" the number of African countries given zero tariffs, China is trying to "create a level playing field" for these countries struggling with development, "who otherwise would not be able to compete" with larger producers, according to Bamidele Adekunle, author, researcher, and essayist affiliated with the University of Guelph and Toronto Metropolitan University.
"It's a signal that China is interested in trade that is mutually beneficial to both parties in this game," the financial expert says.
China's contribution to investing in the development of infrastructure in Africa is a great benefit, but China should capitalize on investing in human and intellectual capital.
"Whether it is Russia, China or the West, they need to spend more on research and development [...] there should be technology transfer," Mr. Adekunle says.
