After an absence of more than 31 years, Russia has officially resumed the activites of its embassy in Burkina Faso, marking a significant milestone in the resumption of bilateral relations between the two nations, the Burkinabe Foreign Ministry and a Russian diplomat said on Thursday.During a meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso, Alexei Saltykov, Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean Marie Traore, expressed satisfaction with the resumption of cooperation and praised the efforts that have led to a dynamic engagement between the two countries. In response, the Russian diplomat underscored the importance of further strengthening bilateral relations and stressed the need for continued efforts to strengthen ties between the two nations.Saltykov reaffirmed Russia's commitment to maintaining its longstanding and friendly relations with the West African country and confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin would soon name the new envoy. This development aligns with Russia's broader diplomatic initiative to expand its presence in African countries, as announced by President Putin at the Second Russia-Africa Summit. In addition to the embassy in Ouagadougou, Moscow plans to reopen its diplomatic mission in Equatorial Guinea's capital, Malabo, before the end of 2023, and establish a presence in South Sudan at a later date.Recent shifts in Burkina Faso's geopolitical stance, manifested as a strategic distancing from its historical partner and former colonizer France in favor of closer ties with Russia, have been underscored by the signing of various agreements. Most notably, Burkina Faso and Russia signed an agreement for the construction of a nuclear power plant to boost the country's energy capacity in the face of challenges such as an ongoing jihadist insurgency.

In July, President Vladimir Putin announced plans to reopen Russian embassies in Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea in order to strengthen cooperation with African countries in all spheres. This decision was further emphasized in August when Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed orders to reopen the two diplomatic missions.
After an absence of more than 31 years, Russia has officially resumed the activites of its embassy in Burkina Faso, marking a significant milestone in the resumption of
bilateral relations between the two nations, the Burkinabe Foreign Ministry and a Russian diplomat said on Thursday.
During a meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso, Alexei Saltykov, Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean Marie Traore, expressed satisfaction with the resumption of cooperation and praised the efforts that have led to a dynamic engagement between the two countries.
"This is proof that our cooperation is on the right track," the minister said during the meeting with Saltykov. "I congratulate you on the work you have personally done to ensure that cooperation between Burkina Faso and the Russian Federation is now dynamic."
In response, the Russian diplomat underscored the importance of further strengthening bilateral relations and stressed the need for continued efforts to strengthen ties between the two nations.
"The future ambassador accredited to Burkina Faso must work to make [bilateral relations] even better," stressed Saltykov, who will serve as Russia's ambassador to Burkina Faso until a new envoy is appointed.
Saltykov reaffirmed Russia's commitment to maintaining its longstanding and friendly relations with the West African country and confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin would soon name the new envoy.
This development aligns with Russia's broader diplomatic initiative to
expand its presence in African countries, as announced by President Putin at the Second Russia-Africa Summit. In addition to the embassy in Ouagadougou, Moscow plans to reopen its
diplomatic mission in Equatorial Guinea's capital, Malabo, before the end of 2023, and establish a presence in South Sudan at a later date.
Recent shifts in Burkina Faso's geopolitical stance, manifested as a strategic distancing from its historical partner and former colonizer France in favor of closer ties with Russia, have been underscored by the signing of various agreements. Most notably, Burkina Faso and Russia signed an agreement for the construction of a
nuclear power plant to boost the country's energy capacity in the face of challenges such as an ongoing jihadist insurgency.
