West Africa remains a major transit region for cocaine, and drug trafficking helps finance various armed groups in the Sahel, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The Senegalese Navy has announced the seizure of 690 kilograms of cocaine that was en route to Europe on a super speedboat.
The vessel was intercepted by the deep-sea patrol boat 220 kilometers off the coast of Senegal, resulting in the arrest of the 5 Spaniards on board, the media added.

The patrol boat had to use verbal warnings and then warning shots to stop the vessel of the intruders, who dumped their cargo before it was intercepted, according to the navy.

In late November, the Senegalese Navy revealed that it had seized three tons of pure cocaine off the coast of the capital, Dakar, one of the largest seizures in the country's history.
