In July, the Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum was overturned and detained as a result of a miliatry coup, led by Gen. Abdrahamane Tiani. In September 2022, the Bukinabe military leader Captain Ibrahim Traore came to power in a coup d'état. Both West African countries neighbor with Benin.
Benin wants to restore relations with neighbor countries who underwent coups, Benin's President Patrice Talon said.
"Our desire [is to] very quickly restore relations between Benin and the countries where coups d'etat took place," he said on Thursday.

Referring in particular to Niger, where the military overthrew Bazoum in July, Talon said that "there is a time to condemn, to demand, and also a time to take stock and to take note" of what has happened.
Benin has borders with Burkina Faso and Niger, which are ruled by the coup leaders, who stopped military cooperation with its former colonizer, France, due to anti-French demonstrations in the countries.
