MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In late September 2022, a group of military personnel in Burkina Faso, led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, announced the removal of the head of the transitional government of the country, Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandago Damiba, the suspension of the constitution and the dissolution of the government.
The Burkinabe military authorities, who came to power in the country in a coup almost a year ago, said Wednesday that a coup attempt was foiled the previous day.
"The transitional government of Burkina Faso informs the public that intelligence services foiled the coup attempt on 26 September," the authorities said in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Some military and other officials behind the coup attempt have been detained, and others continue to be pursued, the statement said.
In addition, the military prosecutor reportedly launched an investigation based on "credible allegations about a plot against state security implicating officers."
"Investigations will help unmask the instigators of this plot," the statement read.
Officers and others behind the coup attempt, whose names were not disclosed, aimed to "attack the institutions of the Republic and plunge the country in chaos," authorities stated.
On Monday, the military leaders suspended work of the French news magazine Jeune Afrique due to publishing "untruthful" articles, which reported strained relations and dissatisfaction within the country's armed forces.
On Tuesday, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of the Burkinabe capital city, Ouagadougou, expressing support for Traore, local media said, adding that the protesters chanted the leaders name while waving Burkinabe and Russian flags.
