Live Updates: Russian President Putin Holds Annual Presser, Answers Citizens' Questions

Subscribe
In 2001, Russian leader Vladimir Putin introduced a practice of holding large annual press conferences with the head of state. That same year Russian citizens had the opportunity to get answers on their questions from the country's leader in a live broadcast as part of the "Direct Line" with the president.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is holding the "Results of the Year with Vladimir Putin" program, an annual event during which the head of state answers questions from journalists and citizens in a live broadcast.
The program combines the press conference and the "Direct Line" with the president, which were introduced in 2001 and took place separately until 2020.
According to Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, over one million questions were submitted through text messages, social networks, the program's website, and a special mobile application. The president will answer some of them on Thursday.

Japan Does Not Refuse, Uses Supplies of Russian Energy Resources – Putin
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Japan is not refusing energy resources from Russia and still imports them, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.
“By the way, Japan does not refuse [energy resources] and imports them. … We [Russia] don’t mind,” Putin told a press conference.
When it comes to gas supplies, Russia does not do anything for political reasons, Putin added.
“We have never done anything for political reasons and, in general, we do not intend to do such things. As for turning east. It happened, as I have said many times, not due to the fact that our situation in the Ukrainian direction has worsened. No, we started this a long time ago,” Putin said, adding that Russia is thinking about further expanding energy exports, including to China.

Nord Stream Pipelines Were Likely Blown Up by US – Putin
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Nord Stream pipelines were likely blown up by the United States, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.
"The fact that Europe is not getting enough [gas] is its problem. Strangely enough, they tried to blame us for not selling something. This is complete nonsense, because we did not close the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline in Poland, we did not close the second line of the gas pipeline through the territory of Ukraine, Ukraine did it. We did not blow up Nord Stream 1 and partially Nord Stream 2. Most likely, the US did it, or someone did it at their suggestion," Putin said during the joint "Direct Line" Q&A session and annual press conference.

Putin Says AI Leaders to Start Negotiating in Case of Threat to Humanity
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Leaders in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) will begin to negotiate when threats to humanity arise, as it was in the case with nuclear weapons, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.
"Yes, we can now talk about possible restrictions, about self-restraints, we can and should talk about the need to somehow come to an agreement between leaders so as not to create conditions that could lead to some kind of danger for humanity. At one time, when nuclear energy turned into a nuclear bomb and they realized that the threat to those who own these weapons was growing, then they began to negotiate. This threat and damage is becoming unacceptable," Putin told a press conference.
It is impossible to prevent the development of AI, and everything must be done to be leaders in this direction, but how it will end is unknown, he added.

Putin Says Rise of Islamophobia in World Resulted From Policy of Certain Elites
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A rise of Islamophobia and other manifestations of nationalism in the world are the result of the policies of certain elites, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.
"There is an upward trend [of Islamophobia]. Do you know what this is connected with, in my opinion? The fact that people are faced with some kind of injustice. Look what is happening in the Gaza Strip. Throughout the Islamic world there is a certain reaction and growth ... in the number of radically thinking people. This growth is obvious, the number of these people is increasing. There is nothing good here, after all, this is the result of the policies of certain elites and the lack of a fair solution to the Palestinian problem for decades," Putin told a press conference.
Commenting on Russophobia, he said that this is one of the vectors of the fight against Russia in the world, adding that Russia should nip in the bud attempts to destabilize society from the inside.

Russia Sees West's Attempts to Switch NATO's Activities to Asia, Create Blocs - Putin
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The West is making attempts to switch NATO activities to Asia, heating up the situation and creating new military-political blocs, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.
"We see attempts by the West to shift NATO's activities towards Asia, which clearly go beyond the scope of the statutory goals of this organization — the North Atlantic bloc. It is called the North Atlantic bloc, what should it do in Asia? No, they are heading to Asia. They provoke there, heat up the situation, create new military-political blocs with different compositions," Putin told a press conference.

Agreements on US Citizens Gershkovich, Whelan Should Be mutually Acceptable - Putin
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia is not abandoning the idea of returning WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan, but agreements with the United States should be mutually acceptable, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.
"You say, why do not they return to their homeland? Why should not they commit crimes on the territory of Russia? But this is all rhetoric. But it is not that we refused to return them. We do not give up," Putin told a press conference, adding that "these agreements must be mutually acceptable and must suit both parties."
Commenting on the extradition to the United States, Putin said that it would be good for them not to commit crimes, adding that decisions need to be based on humanitarian considerations.
Russia hopes that the solution will be found on the exchange of Gershkovich and Whelan, he said.

The president said that this also applied to the Krasnodar Territory in southwestern Russia. The regional administration told Sputnik that the Krasnodar airport could be reopened after a test flight on December 15.
