On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin compared the current situation in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, saying that nothing like what Israel is doing in the Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip is taking place in the zone of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine. He described the situation in Gaza as a "disaster".
The main difference between the situation in Ukraine and Gaza is that Israel has been
violating the international law in the Palestinian territories for decades, both in the Gaza Strip and also in the occupied West Bank,
Mehmet Rakipoglu, a researcher on international affairs at Dimensions for Strategic Studies, a think tank based in London, told
Sputnik.
Rakipoglu's remarks came after Russian President Vladimir Putin
commented on the comparison between the Russian military operation in Ukraine and the situation in the Gaza Strip, where well over 18,000 Palestinian civilians, including more than 7,000 children, have been killed in Israeli attacks on residential areas, according to Gaza's authorities.
"Israel does not respect the rights of Palestinians. This is not happening just today. 40 years ago or 30 years ago, you still saw the same scenario. So it's like a pattern. It's like a bunch of examples that have been implemented by Israel in Gaza," he said.
Rakipoglu added that when "we
compare Gaza and Ukraine, we see that Israel is the main actor that violates international law."
He argued that Israel "will not allow" some "anti-Western hegemony" countries to get involved in the Gaza conflict in order to continue its violations against the Palestinian people.
"Israel will not allow any country to get involved in the issue, especially if these countries are against the Western hegemony, such as Russia and China. In that regard, Israel does not want Russia to get involved by opening a hospital. It shows that Israel does not have any concern or does not have any respect for civilians," the researcher said.
The possibility of opening a Russian hospital to help victims from Gaza is discussed with Egypt's leader and the prime minister of Israel, but it is
not safe yet, Putin said on Thursday.
Rakipoglu highlighted that opening a hospital in Gaza must have been seen by Tel Aviv as a "good move" if the Jewish State was "a democratic country."
"Israel directly perceives that this is a threat to the national security of Israel. So Israel is not a democratic country," Rakipoglu suggested.
On Thursday, President Putin held his joint "Direct Line" question-and-answer session and annual press conference, where he answered questions from journalists and citizens as part of the "Results of the Year with Vladimir Putin" program.
The Russian leader said that there is nothing like what Israel is doing in the Gaza Strip happening in the zone of the special military operation in Ukraine.
"What is happening [in the Gaza Strip] is of course a disaster. We have just talked about the situation related to the Ukrainian crisis, but you and everyone present here and around the world can see: look at the special military operation and what is happening in the Gaza Strip, and feel the difference. There is nothing like this in Ukraine," Putin said.
