Tsegay, 26, is a bronze medalist in the 5,000 meters at the Tokyo Olympics. This year she became world champion in the 10,000-meter run and last year in the 5,000-meter dash.
Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay broke the world's 5,000-meter dash record, winning the Diamond League finals in Oregon, US, in 14:00.21.
Tsegay shattered the previous record, set by Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon earlier this year in Paris, by nearly five seconds.
In June, at the Diamond League in Paris, Kipyegon broke a women's 5,000-meter world record by covering the course in 14:05.20 (nearly 5 seconds slower than Tsegay's new record).
Prior to Kipyegon, the title was held by Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey with a mark of 14:06.62, which she achieved in October 2020, beating the previous world record of 14:11.15 set by Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba in 2008.

Commenting on her achievement, Tsegay promised the press that she would try to go under 14 minutes next year.

"My focus today was the world record," the runner added.

Tsegay was congratulated on her world record by Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, praising her as "an exceptional athlete."
The podium of the competition was occupied by athletes from Africa: Kenya's Beatrice Chebet finished second in the race in 14:05.92, the third-fastest time ever, while Ethiopia's Ejgayehu Taye (14:21.52) took home the bronze.
