Mauritania, Chad Pave Way to Dissolution of G5 Sahel

The G5 Sahel is an alliance of five West African countries working together on development and security issues, including countering the threat posed by terrorist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda* and Daesh* in the region. The alliance was created in 2014 and comprises Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger.
Chad and Mauritania are paving the way for the dissolution of the Sahel Five (G5) regional grouping, from which Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger had previously withdrawn from all bodies.

"The Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Republic of Chad take note of and respect the sovereign decision of the sister republics of Burkina Faso and Niger," the two countries said in a statement. "[We] will implement all necessary measures in accordance with the G5 founding convention, notably Article 20."

Mali, Niger Revoke Agreements on Tax Cooperation With France, Reports Say
According to Article 20 of the Convention, the G5 Sahel alliance can be dissolved at the request of at least three member states.
In early December, Burkina Faso and Niger announced their withdrawal from all institutions of the G5 Sahel regional grouping, including the joint military force, citing that it was "failing to reach its objectives".
In May 2022, the government of Mali announced its withdrawal from all structures of the regional grouping.
