Heavy gunfire was heard in Guinea-Bissau's capital, Bissau, on Friday after national guard officers tried to free a detained minister.
Shooting and fighting that broke out in Guinea-Bissau's capital on Friday was an attempted coup, Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo said on Saturday.

"I can assure you that the events of December 1, 2023, are yet another attempted coup and those responsible will suffer serious consequences," the president was quoted as saying at the address to journalists at Osvaldo Vieira international airport, after his return from the COP28 climate conference in Dubai.

On that day, the president was participating at the COP28 climate forum in Dubai and, having learned about what had happened, decided to return to his homeland.
Embalo, who has been the president of Guinea-Bissau since 2020, recalled that an attempt was made to overthrow him in 2022, adding that such events must be nipped in the bud.

"On February 1, 2022, we witnessed the same scenario. We still need to put an end once and for all to these upheavals in Guinea-Bissau," Embalo said.

Furthermore, the president announced that on Monday, he will form a commission of inquiry to look into the circumstances surrounding the attempted coup.
According to media outlets, there was gunfire in the capital, Bissau, on Friday night and early morning of the same day during clashes between special forces of the presidential guard and national guard. The national guard soldiers opened fire following the release of two government officials who had been questioned by police on Thursday.
Later that day, an army chief of staff spokesman reportedly stated that colonel Victor Tchongo, the head of the security forces unit engaged in nocturnal fighting, was detained by Guinea-Bissau's army, which also controlled the situation.

Burkina Faso Coup Foiled on Tuesday, Military Authorities Say
The President of Guinea-Bissau made the statement shortly after an attempted coup in another West African country, Sierra Leone. On November 26, the nation witnessed an attack on the country's weapons depot and central Pademba Road Prison.
On Tuesday, Sierra Leone's Minister of Information, Chernor Bah, called the events a "failed coup attempt" led largely by the bodyguards of former state President Ernest Bai Koroma to overthrow the government.
