About 2 Mln Trees to Be Planted Around Health Facilities in Rwanda
According to Rwanda's Ministry of Environment, thanks to the nation's reforestation efforts, forests now cover over 30% of the country's surface, more than 7,200 square kilometers.
Rwandan Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the country's Ministry of Environment, has launched a GreenHospital initiative to plant about two million trees around hospitals, the Ministry of Health
said on social networks.
"As part of the #GreenHospital initiative, 2 million trees will be planted in all hospitals. In addition to the fact that this activity aims to preserve the environment, research has shown that trees and gardens speed up the recovery of patients," the statement read.
The positive
effect of trees on human health has been reiterated by the Rwandan Health Minister, Sabin Nsanzimana, who noted that "in health facilities surrounded by trees and green spaces patients are discharged two days earlier than the recommended time."
"Trees also are stress relievers because they provide fresh air for our bodies," the minister underlined.
According to Nsanzimana, trees will be planted in and around 56 hospitals, 514 health centers, and 1,252 health posts across the country.
"Some 20,000 trees have so far been planted countrywide and we still have a long way to go against the target of reaching 2 million trees. The reason for this campaign is that it is no longer a secret, research has shown that trees, green spaces have a healing power," he added.
The environment ministry reportedly revealed that the East African state plans to plant 63 million trees by the end of 2023 with a view to fostering environmental protection and
climate adaptation.Along with Rwanda, Kenya has also launched a tree-planting campaign. As part of Kenya's Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Program, the country's citizens
plant trees together every year on November 12, in order to nurture about 15 millions trees by 2032.
