BRUSSELS (Sputnik) - Police in Belgium's Schaerbeek municipality have neutralized a person who may have been involved in the shooting attack in Brussels on October 16, the RTBF broadcaster reported on Tuesday.
The person was injured in the chest and taken to the hospital, the broadcaster said, adding that the identity is yet to be established.
On Monday, Belgian media reported that at least two people have been killed and several others injured as a result of a shooting attack in central Brussels ahead of the Euro 2024 qualifier.
The attack took place around 7 p.m. local time (17:00 GMT). An unknown man wearing an orange safety vest reportedly arrived on a moped to a building in Brussels and started shooting at people wearing the jerseys of the Swedish national football team. The attacker is said to have used a Kalashnikov assault rifle and screamed Allahu akbar. Videos by eyewitnesses published on social media show the attacker following the running victims and shooting at them.
The two victims are presumably Swedish citizens who came to Brussels to cheer for the Swedish national football team, media reported.
The shooter reportedly fled after the attack and is being sought by the Belgian police.
Later in the day, the attacker published a video in which he said that he was a member of the Islamic State* (IS) and was ready to "kill and die," Belgian news portal Sudinfo said.
A football match between the Swedish and Belgian national teams was taking place in Brussels during the shooting, but was suspended after the first half due to the tragic events.
Belgian law enforcement agents tightened security in the capital city after the shooting, local media reported. The alert level in Brussels was reportedly raised to four out of five.
Later, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo as well as the interior and justice ministers arrived at Belgium's National Crisis Center, where they will hold an emergency meeting and monitor the development of the situation, the report said.
De Croo also called on Brussels residents to be vigilant and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims as well as to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
"I have just offered my sincere condolences to [Kristersson] following tonight's harrowing attack on Swedish citizens in Brussels ... I am closely following the situation, together with the Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs from [National Crisis Center]. We are monitoring the situation and ask the people of Brussels to be vigilant," he wrote on X.
European Council President Charles Michel also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
Later, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said that the Swedish government is working with Brussels to find the shooter.
"Devastated by the news of two Swedish football supporters murdered in Brussels tonight and a third person being seriously wounded. All my thoughts are with their families and loved ones. Swedish authorities work closely with their Belgian partners to find the murderer," Billstrom said on X.
At the same time, a spokesperson for the Brussels police told the LN24 broadcaster that the police do not yet see a connection between the attack on Swedish football fans and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He added, however, that the nationality of the victims "could have been the reason for the attack."
Sudinfo reported that the football fans were attacked by a 45-year-old Tunisian who was known to the Belgian intelligence services for his radical Islamic views. The searches were carried out in the house of the suspect, located in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek, the report read, adding that the shooter is still hiding from the police.
