US Aware of Possibility of Iran's Intervention in Israel-Palestine Conflict, Sullivan Says
The aggravation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could spill over to a wider Middle East region, as Iranian foreign Hossein Amirabdollahian minister reportedly told the UN envoy to the Middle East Tor Wennesland that Iran would intervene in case of the Jerusalem's ground operation in the Gaza Strip.
The United States administration does not rule out that Iran at some stage may directly intervene in the conflict between Palestine and Israel, US National Security Adviser
Jake Sullivan said on Sunday.
"We can't rule out that Iran would choose to get directly engaged some way [in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict]; we have to prepare for every possible contingency," Sullivan noted.
Moreover, the official underlined that during the informal talks, the US warned Iran against the escalation of the conflict.
"We have means of communicating privately with Iran, and we have availed ourselves of those means over the past few days to make clear privately that which we have said publicly," he revealed.
On Sunday, the Iranian Permanent Mission to the United Nations
refuted the country's interference in the conflict in the event of Israeli ground operation, noting that the state would intervene in the conflict if Jerusalem decides to attack Iran.
However, according to the US media report, Iran purportedly notified Israel through the United Nations that it would
have to interfere in the conflict in the event of the Israel's ground operation in the Gaza Strip, which the country declared it
was preparing on Saturday.
According to Sullivan, there were not any specific new information regarding the issue, however, the Iranian mission to the UN posted on its social media that if Israel continues to conduct "crimes and genocide" in Gaza, the situation could "spiral out of control."
"If the Israeli apartheid’s war crimes and genocide are not halted immediately, the situation could spiral out of control and ricochet far-reaching consequences - the responsibility of which lies with the UN, the Security Council and the states steering the Council toward a dead end," the post read.
Furthermore, during a phone call with the French leader Emmanuel Macron, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi highlighted that "the scene [of the conflict] will expand" if Palestinians' position will continue to deteriorate.
"If Israel’s crimes, including the killing of the people and the siege of Gaza don’t stop, the situation can become complicated, and the scene will expand," Raisi was cited as saying by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.
On Sunday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin revealed that the US was sending the USS Eisenhower carrier strike group to the eastern Mediterranean "to deter hostile actions against Israel or any efforts toward widening this war following Hamas's attack."
On the morning of October 7, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip as part of the "Al-Aqsa Flood" operation announced by
Hamas.
In addition, after massive rocket attacks, the organization's fighters penetrated into the border areas in southern Israel. In response, the Israel Defense Forces launched operation Iron Swords against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Within a few days after the attack, the Israeli military took control of all settlements near the Gaza border and began launching airstrikes against targets, including civilians, in the sector. Israel also announced
a complete blockade of the region: the supply of water, food, electricity, medicines, fuel has been suspended.
The number of
victims in the Gaza Strip exceeded 2,400 people. As for Israel, the death toll is over 1,000. Thousands of Israelis and Palestinians were injured. It was also reported that there are several dead and missing Russians, as well as citizens of other countries. According to various sources, about 150 Israelis may be held captive by Hamas.
The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the parties to cease hostilities. According to the position of Russian President
Vladimir Putin, the settlement of the Middle East crisis is possible only on the basis of the "two-state" formula approved by the UN Security Council, which implies the creation of an independent
Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
