Earlier in the week, French authorities prohibited pro-Palestinian rallies in Lyon and Marseille, but hundreds of people have taken to the streets nonetheless. Police have dispersed the rallies using tear gas, people said on social media. Some of the demonstrators were fined 135 euros ($143) for violating the prohibition put in place by the regional police headquarters in Bouches-du-Rhone department, French media reported. Despite the ban, about a hundred people gathered for the demonstration and were waving Palestinian flags, but the police used tear gas against them, the report said. Two pro-Palestine demonstrations that were planned to be held in Paris on Thursday were also banned by the prefecture. On October 7, Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise large-scale rocket attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel to declare a state of war the following day. On October 9, Israel ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million people, cutting off supplies of water, food and fuel. Both Israel and Palestine have reported hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries as a result of the escalation.
