UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The coup in Niger took place on July 26. The country’s President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted and detained by his own guard, led by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani. Following the coup, the ECOWAS suspended all cooperation with Niger and threatened intervention if the rebels did not reinstate Bazoum.
Sierra Leone will support any decision the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) makes regarding potential military intervention in Niger amid the ongoing coup, Sierra Leone Foreign Minister Timothy Kabba told Sputnik on the margins of the UN General Assembly.
"We have not taken any position whether we do military... we will stand with anything that comes from ECOWAS, which will be our collective responsibility," Kabba said.
The ECOWAS has different layers of assessing the situation in Niger, Kabba said.
Sierra Leone, Kabba added, is a beneficiary of the bloc's activities and hopes there will be a diplomatic solution that can immediately put an end to the crisis.
