Turkey Seeking to Discuss Proposals on Grain Deal With UN, Russia in Istanbul, Source Says
ANKARA (Sputnik) - On July 18, the Black Sea Grain Initiative, mediated by Turkey and the UN, which envisioned the creation of a humanitarian corridor for Ukrainian grain exports over the past year amid the Russian military operation, expired because Moscow did not renew its participation in it.
Turkey intends to discuss new proposals for Russia on the grain deal at a technical level in Istanbul with the participation of delegations from Russia and the United Nations, a source participating in the Turkish technical delegation told Sputnik.
"We really want to discuss the details of all existing proposals, including new ones that we are now developing together with the UN, at the technical level in Istanbul, with the participation of the Russian delegation," the source said.
He added that it is too early to talk about the expected timing of this meeting.
"We, together with the UN, must first determine what proposals we will present to the Russian side, find out the position of the Russian side on these proposals, and only then prepare this meeting based on the existing specific proposals," the source noted.
The source added that Turkey will soon complete the development of new proposals which
are being prepared on the basis of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recommendations, which were developed, among other things, after his discussions with world leaders on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
"They imply a solution to problems related to the payment system and insurance of Russian ships involved in exports. The issue will finally become clear after the planned negotiations between Mr. President and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly," the source stated.
The 78th session of the UN General Assembly will take place from September 19 to 26.
