BENGHAZI (Sputnik) - Libyan media reported on Sunday that torrential rains brought by Storm Daniel had caused high water and floods in multiple cities and towns in eastern Libya, including Al-Bayda and Derna.
About 25% of Libya's eastern city of Derna has been destroyed by floods, Libyan Civil Aviation Minister Hisham Shekiwat told Sputnik on Tuesday, adding that the North African country has received assistance from Egypt, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
"The scale of destruction is very large, 25% of the city has disappeared," Shekiwat said.
He added that all airports in the country's eastern region were ready to receive aid, including that delivered by large aircraft.
At the same time, Libya's eastern city of Susah is facing power outages, communication issues and road blockades, the head of the Susah municipal council told Sputnik.
"There is no electricity, the connection is weak or completely absent in some parts of the city, a number of roads are blocked," the official said.
Earlier on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Red Crescent Movement in the North African country told Sputnik that over 9,000 people remain missing after devastating floods hit Derna. Libyan National Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Ahmed Al-Mismari later told Sputnik that between 5,000 and 6,000 people were missing in eastern Libya as a result of the floods.

Due to heavy downpours air and sea ports in the region were closed. The cities of Susah and Derna were declared natural disaster zones. Curfews were imposed in flood-affected cities.
