Due to heavy rains in the region, airports and seaports were closed. The eastern cities of Sousse and Derna were declared disaster zones, and curfews were imposed in flood-affected towns.
On Sunday, heavy rains caused by storm Daniel caused flooding and inundation in a number of cities and towns in eastern Libya, including Bayda and Derna. The town of Derna suffered the brunt of the casualties and destruction, as two dams burst under the pressure of the water and swept away entire neighborhoods.
The head of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies delegation in the country Tamer Ramadan called the death toll in Derna "huge" and it could reach thousands and added that the number of missing people is hitting about 10,000 persons so far.
Oussama Hamad, Prime Minister of the country's east-based government, has reported "more than 2,000 dead and thousands missing" in Derna.
Libya's Tripoli-based presidential council has asked other states and international organizations to help flood-affected areas in the east of the country. The government reportedly delivered a plane with 14 tonnes of medical supplies, body bags and more than 80 doctors and paramedics to address the disaster.
