On Wednesday, Ali Bongo Ondimba, the president of Gabon, was reelected as the country's head for the next term after securing 64.2% of votes. After that the country's military delivered a televised address to announce the cancellation of the elections' results and the dissolution of all the institutions of the republic.

UN Security Council 'Investigating' Situation in Gabon, US Envoy Says
The United Nations Security Council is investigating the situation in Gabon and members are discussing the next possible course of action, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said on Wednesday.
"We're still investigating the situation. It's ongoing right now, and we don't have all the details, but we are consulting with other members of the Council on what action we might take," Thomas-Greenfield said.
The US ambassador noted that the UN Security Council conducted an emergency meeting when the coup took place in Niger.

US Following Gabon Military Coup 'Very, Very Closely', Kirby Says
The United States is following the military coup attempt in Gabon "very, very closely," National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said Wednesday.

"We're following this very, very closely," Kirby said during a press briefing. "It’s deeply concerning to us […] We will remain a supporter of the people in the region […] and their demand for democratic governance."

Kirby added that it was too soon to say whether Africa was witnessing a domino effect with regard to a spate of recent coups.

AU 'Strongly Condemns' Military Takover Attempt in Gabon, Calls for Ensuring President's Safety
Moussa Faki Mahamat, head of the African Union Commission, stated that he "strongly condemns" the seizure of power in Gabon.

"[Faki] is following with great concern the situation in the Gabonese Republic and strongly condemns the attempted coup d'etat in the country as a way of resolving its current post-electoral crisis," reads a statement published on the website of the continental organization.

He "calls on the national army and security forces to adhere strictly to their republican vocation, to guarantee the physical integrity of the president of the republic, members of his family as well as those of his government".

"[Faki] encourages all political, civil and military actors in Gabon to favour peaceful political paths leading to the rapid return to democratic constitutional order in the country."

Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba has been fired but will retain all civil rights, General Brice Oligui Nguema, head of the Republican Guard, told the media.
According to observers, Nguema led the military takeover in Gabon.
"He (Ali Bongo) was the head of state of Gabon. He is retired and enjoys all his rights. He is an ordinary Gabonese, like everyone else," the general answered a question about the fate of the deposed president.
