Earlier this week, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at the XI Moscow Conference on International Security (MCIS) that the fight against neo-colonialism and terrorist threats is a basic element of cooperation between Russia and African countries.
Russia, one of the first countries to support the independence movement of African nations, continues to indirectly assist the continent in its struggle against the expansion of imperialism, said Alain Tribert Mutabazi, Burundi's Minister of National Defense and Veteran Affairs, in an interview with Sputnik Africa.

"To this day, the voice of the Russian Federation in support of the oppressed peoples in the UN Security Council and other international platforms has not weakened. In addition, [Russia] is fighting against the expansion of imperialism and all forms of unjust domination," he said.

He recalled that since the times of the USSR, the country has provided financial and technical assistance to the continent, as well as training for African personnel. According to the minister, Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, also advocates for the interests of African nations within the framework of the organization.

"Since Africa gained independence, Russia has supported it in many ways, including in the field of security. One of the key activities is the supply of military equipment and weapons," he elaborated.

Mutabazi, who attended the Army-2023 International Military-Technical Forum at the Patriot Exhibition and Convention Centre, praised Russian military equipment, saying it is efficient, easy to use, accurate and has "a very attractive affordable price." He noted that, in general, all the weapons on display at the forum are "very interesting."
The minister added that he was particularly interested in the easily transportable and controllable infantry weapons adapted for fighting in mountains and jungle.
