The BRICS group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is receiving international support and recognition from more and more countries around the world that have either expressed their interest in joining the format, or have already officially applied to become members.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has announced that his country has officially applied to become a member of the BRICS format, expressing hope that the application will be approved shortly.
The president also pointed to the “leading” role the BRICS group plays “in building a new world,” noting that the format is “paving a dynamic way toward a multipolar world order.”

"Venezuela has filed an application to join BRICS and we hope that this application will be approved by China, Brazil, India, South Africa and Russia. We expect a positive response so that Venezuela can happily enter the dynamics of the BRICS to learn, to support and help," the president said during a TV show, broadcast by Venezolana de Television TV channel.

The announcement follows a May statement by Maduro, in which he expressed the nation’s will to join BRICS.
"If they ask Venezuela whether we want to join the BRICS at some point — Venezuela says yes, we would like to be part of the BRICS and take part in the construction of this new architecture and global policy," Maduro said at the time.
The idea of Caracas joining the BRICS group has already been supported by Russia, China, and Brazil.
In 2022, BRICS announced it would expand its membership to make the organization more inclusive.
As of now, over 30 nations have already either expressed their desire to become members of the format or officially applied for membership, according to South African BRICS sherpa Anil Sooklal.
"Twenty-two countries have formally approached BRICS to become a full member of the group, there's an equal number of countries that have been informally asking about becoming BRICS members," Sooklal said in late July.
Argentina, Algeria, Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia are among the countries that have officially applied for membership.
The issue of BRICS expansion will be on the agenda of the upcoming BRICS Summit slated to take place on August 22-24 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
