The second Russia-Africa Summit kicked off on Thursday in St. Petersburg, Russia's cultural capital. The two-day summit, which is seen as a key event in Russia-Africa relations, brought together politicians and experts from Russia and the continent, who shared their views on, among other things, the current changes in the world of politics.
Countries all over the world are seeking for an alternative to the West's dominance in the system of international relations and see it in the partnership offered by the BRICS economic bloc, said Nomvula Mokonyane, First Deputy Secretary-General of South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), in an exclusive interview with Sputnik Africa.
"The world is yearning for an alternative [...]. It's again, about diversification, broadening the scope, both of support in terms of financial support, including in terms of inclusive growth, the growth trajectory," she said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa Summit, she recalled that earlier this month, the ANC hosted the BRICS Political Parties Plus Dialogue. She noted that the party invited representatives from all African countries, many of which attended the gathering.

South African Politician Says Pretoria to Reconsider Interaction With ICC
According to Mokonyane, this is a clear manifestation that African countries, as well as other nations across the globe, are striving for diversification, and want to establish a partnership with the economic bloc, "to identify with BRICS."
"No country and no self-respecting nation can just be trapped onto one approach," she stressed.
She added that the fact that many African nations are now taking part in the work of the Russia-Africa Summit against all odds is "a very good symbol of solidarity." By coming to St. Petersburg and participating in the summit, Africans showed that they will not succumb to the West's will and its efforts to undermine Russian-African cooperation.
"It's a very strong symbol of resistance against the domination of one over many. It is also a commitment that the future of this world is dependent on diversity and on protection of humanity and on interventions that have mutual respect and mutual benefit," Mokonyane underscored.
