Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had arrived in Beijing, where he held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Algerian presidency has said.
The
five-day trip, according to the statement, is aimed at "strengthening the solid, deep-rooted relations and economic cooperation" between the two countries.
The leaders signed 19 documents, including agreements in several sectors and memoranda of understanding, the Algerian president's press service said.
For his part, Xi pointed to the common historical links between China and Algeria.
"Sixty-five years ago, China and Algeria were brought together by the common cause of opposing imperialism and colonialism and seeking national independence and liberation," Xi told Tebboune.
Xi likewise thanked Algeria for its "unequivocal support for China’s just position on issues related to Taiwan, Xinjiang and human rights."
He also pledged to Tebboune that China is willing to cooperate with Algeria to "carry forward the longstanding friendship and strive for still bigger progress in the China-Algeria comprehensive strategic partnership."
The Chinese leader promised that Beijing will import more quality products from
Algeria, and encourage and support Chinese enterprises to explore cooperation opportunities in Algeria.
In 2014, China and Algeria moved to the comprehensive strategic partnership level, becoming the first Arab country to achieve this, with an annual bilateral trade volume of about $7 billion.
Last November, the countries signed a strategic agreement that runs until 2026 and aims to strengthen communications and bilateral relations.
