Iranian President's Trip to Africa Could Boost Cooperation: Foreign Ministry
16:32 10.07.2023 (Updated: 10:50 03.08.2023) The visit will be the first trip by an Iranian president to the African continent since 2013, when then-Iranian top official Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made a tour that included Benin, Niger and Ghana.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's African tour is an opportunity to take a leap in cooperation between Iran and African countries, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said during a press conference.
Raisi will lead a delegation from Tehran to Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe on Tuesday at the invitation of his counterparts in the host countries.
"This is a very important opportunity [...] to take a new leap in the joint, constructive and beneficial interaction process between Iran and these three countries and [other] countries in the region," Kanaani said, as quoted by local media.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman
described Africa as a "continent of opportunities". He stressed that Iran can provide serious assistance to African countries in the science-intensive sphere.
Raisi will reportedly hold meetings with traders, business representatives and economic officials from Iran and host countries within his tour.
In his January 2022 remarks, Raisi condemned the goals and interests that the West pursues in Africa, stating Iran's support for the independence, development, and welfare of African states.
Back in June, the Iranian president also made a tour of three Latin American nations of Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba.
Apart from that, Raisi has also been
reportedly invited to attend the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, which will be held on August 22-24.
