Lavrov: Russia Will Continue Supporting Somalia's Military With Arms Supplies, Training

On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his Somalian counterpart Abshir Omar Jama in Moscow to discuss a wide range of regional and global issues.
Russia is ready to meet the needs of Somalia to fight terrorists remaining in the country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after the bilateral talks with Somalia's Foreign Minister Abshir Omar Jama.

"Military-technical cooperation: we reiterated our readiness to meet the needs of the Somali national army in the appropriate equipment to complete the efforts to combat the terrorists and extremists that still remain on the territory of this country. I mean groups such as Al-Shabaab* and Al-Qaeda*," the Russian minister said.

Lavrov has also noted that Russia will continue to assist Somalia in the training of personnel for the national police.
During the press conference, the Russian minister expressed gratitude to "Somali friends for the decision of the President of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, to personally participate" in the upcoming Second Russia-Africa Summit, which is set to take place in July in St. Petersburg, Russia.
After the talks, both ministers also signed a memorandum on consultations and cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries.
