American singer Tina Turner has died at the age of 83, according to her social media account. According to the media, she died after a long illness at her home in Küsnacht near the Swiss city of Zurich.
The artist received Swiss citizenship in 2013, and renounced her US citizenship.
Turner (real name Anna May Bullock) was born on November 26, 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee, USA.
In St. Louis, Anna met rhythm and blues artist Ike Turner, the leader of The Kings of Rhythm. Soon Ike invited her to become the vocalist of the group. Anna became the lead singer of the group, and Ike's new song A Fool In Love, performed by her, became a hit all over America. Ike changed Anna's name to Tina Turner and created a new group, Ike & Tina Turner Revue.
The new band quickly became popular and held a series of tours. The album River Deep—Mountain High (1966) became a hit in Europe. This success was followed by an invitation from the popular British band the Rolling Stones to take part in their UK tour. In 1969, Tina and Ike toured America with the Rolling Stones, and a cover version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival Proud Mary (1971) became an American hit and sold over a million copies.
Tina Turner became a solo artist in 1976. In 1984, Turner released her debut solo album, Private Dancer, which was a huge success. At the Grammy Music Awards, she was awarded Best Female Singer, Best Rock Singer and Best Song. The singer toured a lot, recorded albums, made a world tour, and gave 170 concerts. Later albums included Break Every Rule (1986), Foreign Affair (1989), and Wildest Dreams (1996). Her greatest hits compilation All the Best was released in 2004.
In 1985, Tina Turner starred in the film "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" with Mel Gibson and performed the song "We Don't Need Another Hero" in it, which became a real hit. In 1995, a new James Bond film "Goldeneye" was released, the soundtrack to which was performed by Tina Turner.
