The Union of the Comoros welcomes US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia and calls on the international community to support the diplomatic process, presidential aide Hamada Madi told Sputnik.
“It is wonderful that Russia and the US started talks on the Ukrainian conflict termination. ... We welcome this positive initiative and hope that the UN and the international community in general will follow their example,” Madi said.
On Tuesday, high-level delegations from Russia and the United States held talks in Riyadh, outlining a range of topics that need to be addressed before the meeting of the heads of state.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the parties agreed to create the conditions for the full resumption of cooperation between the countries and its expansion to new areas of mutual interest.
In particular, Moscow and Washington agreed to eliminate restrictions on the work of their embassies and other foreign institutions, and to form high-level groups to begin work on a resolution of the Ukraine crisis. The minister expressed confidence that the US was beginning to better understand Moscow's position after the talks.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the parties also agreed to resume communication on a number of international issues, taking into account Russia and the US’s responsibilities as nuclear powers. The parties expressed their intention to consider resuming cooperation in space, energy and other areas in the future.
The meeting in Riyadh was initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump. Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov. The US was represented by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff.
