Relations between Russia and Ethiopia are at a very high level; the country is one of the key partners of the Russian Federation in Africa, the chair of Russia's Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, said.
This year marks 127 years of diplomatic ties, she noted, emphasizing a history built on respect, trust, and equal partnership.
Matvienko highlighted Ethiopia's unique position as the only African country never colonized, noting its historic defense of independence and the support it received from Russian Cossacks against Italian invaders in the 19th century.
The senator stated that Russia and Ethiopia share a history of fighting colonialism and now jointly advocate for a fair, multipolar world that opposes neocolonialism and prioritizes equality, respect, and national sovereignty. She also expressed gratitude for Ethiopia's consideration of Russia's views and its support for Russian initiatives at the UN, particularly its balanced approach to the Ukraine situation.
Matvienko reiterated that Moscow welcomes Ethiopia's full membership in BRICS agreed on during Russia's chairmanship in 2024, believing that it will strengthen political cooperation, boost economic growth, and facilitate trade within BRICS and with member states.
She concluded by emphasizing the growing strength of their relationship and the Russian delegation's commitment to supporting this trend during their visit to Addis Ababa, expressing confidence in a productive outcome.
