Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has voiced his government's support for the United States' decision to deport undocumented migrants, including 545 Zimbabweans currently residing in the US illegally, according to the ICE.
"The Government of Zimbabwe supports the United States Government's decision to repatriate and return our Zimbabwean citizens who may have been residing in the US illegally," he wrote on X.
The Trump administration has already initiated deportation flights, targeting undocumented immigrants from countries like Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, India, and Venezuela. Immigration enforcement teams have conducted widespread raids across states including Arizona, California, Texas, New York, and Colorado, leading to the detention of over 5,000 undocumented immigrants since Trump took office, according to ICE statistics shared on X.
The US government has urged foreign nations to assist in verifying the citizenship of suspected nationals, emphasizing that every country is obligated to accept the return of its citizens deemed ineligible to remain in the US.
New legislative changes have given the administration's immigration policies a significant boost. The Laken Riley Act, a legislative win for Trump, allows border agents to detain migrants involved in criminal activities without requiring court approval. Additionally, plans are underway to prepare a facility at Guantanamo Bay capable of housing up to 30,000 undocumented migrants.
These measures have sparked significant backlash, with thousands of protesters gathering in Los Angeles last Sunday to denounce the administration’s stricter border policies and mass deportations.
