US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he plans to be talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin "very soon."
"We are going to be talking with President Putin very soon," Trump told reporters.
He also said that he discussed the Ukraine crisis in his January 17 phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The US is ready to impose new sanctions on Russia should it refuse to negotiate on a peace agreement with Ukraine, the US president also said, noting that Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky told him he wants to see a peace resolution to the conflict with Russia.
"Sounds likely," the leader told reporters when asked if he stands ready to impose additional sanctions on Russia should Moscow refuse to negotiate with Ukraine on a peace deal.
"Zelensky would like to have peace. He told me that very strongly, he'd like to have peace, but it takes two to tango. We'll see what happens," Trump said.
According to the US leader, his administration is looking into the issue of whether to continue the supply of weapons to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
"We are looking at that. We're talking to Zelensky," he noted.
