Mohammed al-Bashir, the head of the so-called "salvation government," said on Tuesday that the Syrian opposition had authorized him to form an interim government in the country.
"By decision of the General Command, we have been authorized to form an interim government. This will be done tentatively by March 1, 2025," al-Bashir told Al Hadath broadcaster.
The "salvation government" was formed by opposition forces in Idlib since January 2024.
Al-Bashir was born in 1983 in Idlib Governorate. He holds a degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Aleppo and a degree in Sharia and Law from the University of Idleb. In 2011, he was the head of the precision instruments department for the Syrian Gas Company. He later served as the director of Sharia education for the Ministry of Awqaf (Endowments) within the Syrian Salvation Government, an entity established in areas administered by the self-declared Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
Al-Bashir subsequently became the Minister of Development and Humanitarian Affairs in that government. In January 2024, he was appointed prime minister of the Syrian Salvation Government.
