Uganda intends to start negotiations with Russia on the construction of a nuclear power plant, Ugandan Foreign Minister Abubaker Jeje Odongo told Sputnik.
The minister noted that the need for energy in Africa is growing, especially for industrialization. He added that the African country attaches significant importance to nuclear energy.
Earlier, Okaasai Sidronius Opolot, Ugandan Minister for Energy, said in October on the sidelines of the International Youth Festival that the country explored uranium reserves and started detailed development to select a site for a nuclear power plant.
Opolot also stated that Uganda signed a memorandum of understanding with the Russian state corporation Rosatom, a longstanding player in nuclear energy. The project underwent prior research.
