Persistent poverty, violations of women's rights, and climate change are some of the major challenges that are facing Africa today and demand "resolutea action", said Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General, at the inauguration ceremony of the renovated Africa Hall in Addis Ababa.
Guterres noted that international organizations, created at the time, when many African countries were colonies, can't address problems of the continent.
“We can only move forward if we also renew and update global institutions, by making them more effective, fair and inclusive,” the Secretary General said.
Guterres added that it’s necessary to invite African countries to the Security Council. Besides, he emphasized the significance of the newly ratified Declaration on Future Generations, which refers to the reform of this key UN institution.
