The UN Security Council holds the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. Comprised of 15 members, each with one vote, the Council's decisions are binding on all UN member states. However, only the five permanent UNSC members have the veto power.
Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Vershinin took part in the meeting of the African Union's Committee of Ten on the UN Security Council reform and the five permanent members of the Security Council, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
Vershinin stressed the need to expand the Security Council by exclusively including Global South nations from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He emphasized the importance of increased African representation to address historical injustices and reflect the continent's growing role in the multipolar world order.
