In his address at the Future Summit held at the United Nations headquarters last week, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized that the UN's structures need to be reformed to more accurately represent the diversity of the contemporary world.
Global international institutions, including the UN Security Council and the International Monetary Fund, need to be reformed to create a fairer and more effective system of international organizations, the South African head of state said on Monday.
In his weekly address to the South African people, he emphasized that the task of ensuring global security “can no longer [be] placed […] in the hands of a few major powers,” especially "when all countries are affected."

“The current approach to world peace is unjust, unfair and unsustainable. The UN Security Council must therefore be more representative of the current membership of the United Nations,” Ramaphosa said. “Sustainable development can only be achieved when it is being driven by inclusive, responsive and agile multilateral institutions. This means that bodies like the United Nations and financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund need to fundamentally reformed.”

South African President Calls for UN Efficiency Improvements to Address Modern, Future Challenges
Ramaphosa announced that South Africa, as the chair country of the G20 in 2025, will seek to reform the structure of international organizations.
"When South Africa assumes the presidency of the G20 later this year, we will prioritize the needs and aspirations of our continent and the Global South," the president noted.
The reform of the Security Council has long been a contentious issue, with various efforts stalling due to disagreements among the permanent members. However, recent calls for such reform have gained momentum, particularly from African leaders.
During this month's sessions of the UN General Assembly, these leaders have been vocal about the need for a more inclusive and representative Council. They argue that the current structure of the UNSC, established in 1945, does not adequately reflect today's global landscape.
