The Nyamulagira volcano in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been erupting since Saturday, and the eruption continues, Charles Balagizi, the scientific director of the Goma Volcanological Observatory (OVG), confirmed on Monday.
"A fiery glow is visible at the summit of the Nyamulagira volcano, observed from the city of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province," Balagizi told the Congolese media on Monday.
The eruption consists of an overflow of lava from the crater, with lava pouring down the northern, western, and southwestern flanks. The latest satellite images show that one of the three flows has advanced about 7 km, the researcher explained.
Normally, Nyamulagira's activities pose no threat to North Kivu's capital. Local media have reported that it has previously erupted into the Virunga National Park or into neighboring roadways.
Nyamulagira and Nyiragongo are the two active volcanoes on Goma. The eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in May 2021 claimed the lives of at least 32 people.
