From Sputnik to Climate Solutions: Africa’s Growing Footprint in Space Tech
Sputnik Africa
World Space Week 2024 connotes the prospects and hurdles of space missions. This annual event unites the international community to celebrate key moments in space technology and the value of its education. Given the harmful effects of climate change, this year's theme, "Space and Climate Change," focuses on space's role in addressing this issue.
Space-based technologies are vital for monitoring environmental changes, providing essential data to develop early warning systems and track ecological shifts. South Africa, as part of the Space for Climate Observatory, is leveraging diverse data collections to create innovative solutions and collaborate with other nations on national adaptation strategies to enhance climate sustainability, Humbulani Mudau, CEO of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), discloses during an interview with African Currents. To find out what else our guest had to say, tune in to the African Currents podcast, brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Pocket Casts, Afripods, Podcast Addict.► Check out all the episodes of African Currents.

Africa’s Growing Footprint in Space-Based Climate Solutions
17:15 10.10.2024 (Updated: 11:31 11.10.2024) World Space Week 2024 connotes the prospects and hurdles of space missions.
"Last year, during the Group on Earth Observation Ministerial Summit, signed and became part of the Space for Climate Observatory, which is a group of space agencies across the globe that are looking at providing tools to study and monitor local climate change impacts by integrating satellite data with other information. So South Africa is actively utilizing multiple datasets to create intelligent solutions for addressing climate change, and we're hoping that we will work with the rest of the African continent to ensure that we do put in place our national adaptation plans as countries in order for us to be climate resilient," Mudau reveals.
