Police in Nigeria have launched a manhunt for British citizen Andrew Wynne (also known as Andrew Povich or Drew Povey) on charges of plotting to overthrow the country's president, Bola Tinubu.
Nigerian authorities have formed a special inter-agency group to investigate the plot, which preliminary information suggests involved foreign mercenaries and was aimed at removing the legally elected Nigerian government headed by President Tinubu, the Daily Trust newspaper reported.
"The Nigeria Police Force has launched a comprehensive investigation into the activities of foreign national and subversive elements plotting to undermine the democratically elected government in Nigeria through unconstitutional regime change and orchestrating violence across the country," the newspaper quoted the group's spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, as saying.
Adejobi added, "Following extensive intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security agencies, nine suspects have been apprehended, who received substantial financial backing from foreign sources to destabilize the country."
The official noted that the plotters were led by a British man, Wynne, who fled the West African country along with one of his local coordinators, named Lucky Ehis Obiyan, following investigations into their activities.
