Senegalese opposition figure Bassirou Diomaye Faye has won the country's 2024 presidential election after garnering 54.28% of the vote in the first round, far ahead of the ruling party's candidate, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, who received only 35.79% of the vote.
Nominated to replace prominent opposition politician Ousmane Sonko, who was disqualified from the race by the Constitutional Council, Faye presented himself as a "candidate for systemic change" and a proponent of "left pan-Africanism".
His proposals included abandoning the CFA franc in favor of a new national currency, suspending the fisheries agreement with the EU, and reducing the powers of the president of the republic.
At 44, the former tax inspector and secretary general of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity party (PASTEF), is set to become Senegal's youngest head of state.
Both the now president-elect and his fellow Sonko were released from prison in Dakar ten days before the presidential election in the country.
