Senegal to Hold Presidential Election on Sunday After Weeks of Delay
The nation's outgoing leader, Macky Sall, who did not run for re-election, said that he "welcomes the smooth running of the elections" and congratulates his opponent "that the trends give a winner."
"This is the victory of the Senegalese democracy," he added on his X page.
The Senegalese presidential election, originally scheduled for February 25, was delayed after Sall's announcement on February 3, leading to parliamentary approval of a postponement to December 15. However, the Constitutional Court nullified these decisions on February 15, urging prompt elections and ruling out extensions of the current president's term beyond April 2.
The June 2 date suggested by a national dialogue held at Sall's initiative was also rejected by the court as unconstitutional, leading to the final date of March 24 set by President Sall.
