Campaigning has begun in Senegal for the country's presidential election, the media reported.The campaign will last 12 days instead of the 21 days stipulated in the national electoral law. There are 19 candidates vying for the presidency. The incumbent President Macky Sall, who has already been elected twice, is not running.In a March 6 decree, Sall set March 24 as the date for the presidential election. The next day, Senegal's Constitutional Council approved the date.Senegal was originally scheduled to hold presidential elections on February 25. However, on February 3, Sall announced in a televised address to the nation that he was postponing the presidential election. The Senegalese parliament approved the postponement of the presidential election from February 25 to December 15, which sparked protests in the nation.On February 15, the Constitutional Court declared these decisions illegal and annulled them. It called on the authorities to hold presidential elections in the country as soon as possible. The court also stated that the powers of the current president cannot be extended by an act of parliament after April 2.The National Dialogue, convened at Sall's initiative, proposed that elections be held on June 2. The president of the country supported this date. However, the court declared it unconstitutional to hold elections after the end of the current president's term. As a result, Sall set a new date - March 24.Presidential elections in Senegal are held in two rounds if no candidate receives 50% plus one vote in the first round.
