The RFI broadcaster's correspondent reported on Thursday that Sonko and Faye have been released.
Senegalese news portal Seneweb has reported earlier that Sonko may soon be released from prison as part of a planned amnesty initiated by Senegalese President Macky Sall.
In early June 2023, Sonko was sentenced to two years in prison for "corrupting youth." The court's decision caused a wave of protests throughout the country. Sonko was arrested and charged with incitement to rebellion. The sentence jeopardized Sonko's right to run for president in the general election in 2024. Later, an appeals court in the Senegalese capital Dakar ruled to overturn the removal of detained Sonko from the electoral register.
In early February, the Senegalese parliament passed a law postponing the presidential election, originally scheduled for February, until December 15, 2024. Senegal's Constitutional Court subsequently annulled the postponement. Following the court's ruling, incumbent Sall said he had taken note of the decision and intended to hold consultations to organize the election as soon as possible.
In early March, the Senegalese government had set March 24 as the election date, and Senegal's Constitutional Council had approved March 24 as the date for the country's 2024 presidential election.
