Sudan required reinstatement of its membership in the African Union as a condition for accepting mediation by the organization in the conflict with the Rapid Support Forces, the media reported.
The condition was voiced by Sudanese Sovereignty Council Head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan at his Sunday meeting with the members of the AU High-Level Panel on the Resolution of the Conflict in Sudan, created by the AU Commission in January.
The union halted the nation's membership in all instances of the organization after in October 2021 the civilian government was removed by al-Burhan and RSF commander General Hamdane Daglo.
After a number of failed temporary nationwide ceasefires, the Sudanese regular army and the RSF in late October 2023 resumed dialogue, which is mediated by Saudi Arabia. Nevertheless, the hostilities in the country continue.
